DURHAM -- It's time to get a fresh perspective for business owners and workers in the region.

With tough financial times touching people all over the country it's always good to have some sound advice from people who know the best way to weather an economic storm.

Starting next week the business section will feature weekly columns from local experts who will give concrete advice on every aspect of running a company and searching for a job.

Here is a look at some of the contributors and the organizations the columnists come from.

Todd Skinner is founder and partner of the Business Accelerator Group, a global consortium of executives who specialize in helping companies with their growth and transition strategies. In Durham Region Mr. Skinner is better known as "The Growth Coach." He has a passion for learning and helping enterprises in his community succeed. Coming from an entrepreneurial background, he draws from almost two decades of personal experience in both entrepreneurial ventures and corporate executive positions. He has conducted business in more than 45 countries; including turning around a failing company in England, starting a business in Russia and in China and a joint-venture in India all before his 30th birthday. Now he is back in Durham -- sharing his previous experience and knowledge with other entrepreneurs in order to ensure their success.

Carol Ann Walker has been running the Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD) for seven years. She spent several years as an entrepreneur in the area of management consulting. Essential Communications helps businesses retain, retrain and revitalize their workforce with practical training. They follow-through with courses that are engaging, effective and what they call "sticky"; in other words -- learning that participants recall long after the session is completed. They have a depth of knowledge. In fact over the past five years they've helped launch more than 700 new businesses in Durham Region. From startup to expansion, from marketing to management at Essential it is all about communication. They offer a full suite of business and communication skills courses.

To provide a fresh look on employment, the space will feature contributions from board members and staff of the Durham Region Local Training Board. The DRLTB works to identify key training and employment issues in Durham Region through consultation with various stakeholders in the community. They then work to address those issues, usually in partnership with industry and education. The organization's mission statement is to work collaboratively with community partners in promoting and facilitating the development of a skilled, relevant, inclusive and adaptive labour force. Contributors from the board will be executive director Rick Lea, project officer Heather McMillan and business co-chair for the board Faelyne Templer.
